Amir Abol Abolghassem snuck a five-liter container full of gasoline into the Genting Casino in Bournemouth, a coastal town in Southern England, and proceeded to pour it on a roulette table while threatening to burn the establishment down, according to a report from the Bournemouth Echo.
The 59-year-old was reportedly a regular at the casino. On Sept. 28, he made his way to the upper levels of the property before throwing a coffee table off the balcony and onto the lower level. He began shouting, yelling, and warned patrons to leave the premises because he was going to set it ablaze.
After the coffee table toss, he turned his attention to the roulette table. He was arrested and was facing knife possession charges and threatening to damage property. He was in front of a judge for his sentencing Monday.
According to the court testimony, the prosecution said that the defendant stated his “life was done” and that he blamed casinos for his misery. Abolghassem said that casinos “needed to be burned down” while he held a lighter near the roulette table for 17 minutes. The prosecution also alleged that Abolghassem pulled a knife from his pocket and put it to his neck. He never lit the lighter or cut himself.
The prosecution also said that once he was in custody, Abolghassem repeatedly apologized for his actions. His lawyers argued that the actions stemmed from his gambling addiction coupled with his loss of employment from the country’s COVID-19-related lockdowns.
The judge sentenced him to two years in jail and gave him a 10-year ban from all British gambling establishments.
